Intro to Bladesmithing - Kiridashi or Utility Knife
Ever wanted to forge your own knife? Come and take the intro to bladesmithing class where you will learn the basics of forging, heat treatment of high carbon steels, grinding bevels and sharpening, and at the end of the day you’ll take home your very own hand forged Kiridashi or Utility knife made by you!
This class is a pre-requisite to any other bladesmithing classes.
Classes will be scheduled after they are paid for, Usually hosted Monday through Friday and occasionally Sundays to accommodate your schedules!
A Kiridashi is a Japanese utility knife with endless uses, from the most obvious box opening, to wood work and leather work, they are a great little blade that fits perfectly in your hand and is a great starting point to learning the art and craft of hand forging a knife.
The utility knife is a general use knife that can be forged to your intended use/desires within the classes parameters.
You’ll learn how to forge by hand on an anvil with a hammer, how to shape hot steel, tong control and what different types of hammers are used for and how to use them most effectively. From there you’ll learn about heat treating high carbon steels, how to relieve stress, how to harden the steel and then how to temper it to avoid having a brittle knife. Lastly you’ll learn about bevel grinding, finishing forge finished textures and the basics of sharpening.
I will be ordering lunch on the day of class, you can either bring your own from home or bring $15 for lunch and I’ll order you a burger, fries and drink from a local burger joint, they have good vegan options too!
